Why Switzerland is expensive

Swiss drivers’ wages, insurance, parking and hotel nights for the driver are among the highest in Europe. Long Alpine routes include the empty return and often a car train.

When the train is better

For one or two travellers with light luggage, SBB trains are cheaper and very reliable. A car pays off for 4–7 people with skis, late arrivals, door-to-door trips to chalets, and days with many stops.
